People realise that I’ve been writing notes on Facebook lately. I guess it’s a way to take off from blogging, hah. And they’re probably thinking, “Why doesn’t this woman sleep at all!? God! At 0440 hours, she wrote a note?!”
Tonight, I listened to a sermon by Pastor Judah Smith while working on two project assignments. A message titled “Losing It” that played on repeat mode on my iTunes player for a couple of hours. It’s a message about revelations and transformation and change.
Have you ever had those times when you battle so much during the week that you just look forward to church on Saturdays and Sundays to recharge and refuel your spirit again? Then perhaps Monday comes and you just face the same old giants and begin to say, “Argh. Lord, I really want Sunday to come quick. I’m really looking forward to church and youth service and all. Really.” This slowly becomes a cycle you can’t break out from.
Week after week, you go to church, hear your Pastor preach, fervently jot down notes and revelations you catch from the message. But yet, into the week – you and I – we just don’t seem to implement these so-called revelations into our daily lives. And everyday, we think that all we need is spiritual warfare.
Do you know what this is? This is what Pastor Judah terms as ‘firing up’. I’d like to call it the ‘Fire-Me-Up Syndrome’. The kind of “rwar-rwarr” we experience in church at the end of an anointed message leads us to a state of firing up, as if we’re so ready to kick the devil’s ass when school and work comes in the following week. It’s like being Sunday worshippers. You worship God on Sunday and forget all about Him, you chuck Him aside for the rest of the week until Sunday comes again. And when your battles really come, you’re thinking, “God! WHY AREN’T YOU COMING THROUGH FOR ME?!” Where’s God when you need Him most?
I once used to be like that. I used to tell Sam and Josh about how I couldn’t wait till church service on Sunday because I often felt spiritually dry throughout the week. I’m tired of missing lessons because of my horrible sleeping habits. Have I not been listening enough? Have I not been hearing the Word enough? Should I read my Bible more?
It all boils down to one thing: The devil isn’t in for us being hungry for the Word. He thwarts us in hearing the Word because he’s afraid we will turn God’s word into right living. Some people go to church, hear the sermon and say ‘Amen’ all the way, write ten pages of notes and all, but at the end of the day, when the real test comes, they struggle. Others read their Bibles without questioning God, why certain words and verses are placed in such awkward places. They simply skip through them. Why? Why do they struggle in the end? Why do I struggle?
Because despite saying ‘Amen’, we weren’t depositing those revelations and words deep down inside us. Church got us fired up, but this passion was short-lived. And the devil loves that. The devil doesn’t care less if we hear the Word as long as it doesn’t affect our living. But when it does, it’s when it poses a threat to him.
Let’s stop being Sunday worshippers. I want to stop being a Sunday worshipper. I want to be a daily worshipper. For when His Word truly gets into me, it’s when transformation begins, and change comes.
Deuteronomy 10:14-17
Look, the highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to the Lord your God. Yet the Lord chose your ancestors as the objects of His love. And He chose you, their descendants, above all other nations, as is evident today. Therefore, change your hearts and stop being stubborn. For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed.
Sometimes, the reason why we don’t receive healing or the things we’re believing for in our lives is because we haven’t really lodged God’s word as a seed sown in our hearts to manifest in us and change the ways we live.
What is the one thing you can change to right your living? Ask Daddy God. Ask Him for that one thing He wants you to change so transformation takes place. Stop taking Sunday messages for granted. Quit that ‘Fire-Me-Up Syndrome’. Don’t just be spirit-filled on Sundays and lose your battles on Monday through Saturday. The reason why we feed on Sunday is to aid us as weapons in our battles for the rest of the week.
I’m gonna start saying ‘Amen’ like I really mean it and take my Father’s word in truth. Let it sink in me and stop listening, it’s time to start hearing with our hearts!
Now, how about that?
Amen.
